How And When To Format A Computer

Formatting may be described as the procedure of cleaning the 'Hard Drive' removing everything that was already stored in it. Any user having a simple knowledge of DOS commands and having an 'OS(Operating System) Disc. Since formatting involves deleting all the programs/data from the computer, all the programs will have to be installed again. Therefore, it is better to know when to format a computer.

Reasons

  • When The Hard Drive Is Almost Full :-
When old and unnecessary files remain stored in the 'Hard Drive' over the years, they are bound to make the computer slow and sluggish. At this point of time, the computer also refuses to store further files or takes time to store new files/data. This means that the capacity of the hard disk is almost used and computer needs to be relieved of old and unnecessary data. It is a time consuming process to find each and every data/file manually and delete all of them one by one. Besides the hard drive may remain full of many 'temporary files' that make the computer slow. It is almost impossible to locate each and every temporary file and delete them. Under these circumstances, a formatting is indispensable to make the computer run fast again.

  • Computer Doesn't Start Easily :-
Windows Registry is a very Key feature of the computer as it comprises all the configuration options and setting of the OS(Operating System). If there is a virus attack that changes the settings of this configuration, the computer refuses to start easily or produces a black screen. When this happens the computer refuses to start or boot only because the OS cannot be loaded. Formatting is the only solution.

  • Too Many Errors :-
Virus are actually corrupt files, sent by unreliable sites, to the computer, when the user browse the internet without a proper 'Antivirus Protection'. Although 'Free Antivirus' gives some protection to the computer but they cannot throw a total shield and protect the user against the most lethal viruses like 'TROJAN'. These viruses corrupt the system and not let the user to use the computer properly or do not allow the user to open files. The only option left is 'Formatting'.

How To Decide On An Ideal Computer Monitor

How To Decide On An Ideal Computer Monitor

Accessories like Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse are absolutely essential for the Computer. It is not possible to operate the computer without them.

The Ideal Monitor

Computer Monitors are not new to us. We spend hours in front of it by doing official work, playing games, watching favorite movies and surfing social network sites. A monitor may be called as a visual display output device that reproduces data from the CPU and works as an interface between CPU and the user. A monitor is connected to the CPU with a cable through a video adaptor or video card. The CPU or Central Processing Unit sends information to the video adaptor about what needs to be displayed on the screen. The function of the video adaptor is to convert the signals sent by CPU,  into a sent of corresponding signals and sending them to the Monitor. After reading the signals received from the video adaptor, the monitor finally displays the requisite data

With the advancement of research, earlier CRT monitors have become obsolete and new generation of monitors like LCD/LED/OLED  have taken its place. Monitors which are clear, bright and large facilitate easier operation for business. Monitors whose resolution is at least (1920 x 1080 or more) with a scree size of at least 21" (diagonally) should be an ideal choice. However, larger monitors like 27" though costlier allow the users to work without strain on eyes for hours. As a basic rule, bigger the LCD monitor the higher the display resolution. Another point should be remembered while choosing a monitor that it can be easily tilted and adjusted for height. Nowadays, monitors with touch-sensitive screens are also available in the market. They enable the users to have more control over various programs by tapping, swiping and dragging on the screen. This leads to faster and easier operation.

LCD Monitor

LCD or Liquid Crystal Display monitors are one of the most popular monitors today and widely used by innumerable number of individuals both at work and home. They need less power, need less space, lightweight, compact with excellent height adjuster and brilliant display. LCD monitors are of two types - TFT (Active Matrix LDC Technology) most common in use with superb picture quality. The other type is 'Passive Matrix Technology' which is not very popular with users.

LED Monitor

More recent invention is the LED or Light Emitting Diode monitors which claims to have better picture clarity compared to LCD monitors. The basic difference between a LCD monitor and a LED monitor is that in case of LCD monitor 'cold cathode light' is used to power up the LCD panel, whereas, in LED monitor 'light emitting diode' is used to power up the LCD panel. It enhances the luminosity and clarity of picture. There are three types of LED monitors available based on how the diodes are placed in the panel. They are - Direct LED, Edge LED and RGB LED. While white diodes are used in case of 'Direct LED' & 'Edge LED' monitors - color diodes ( Red, Green & Blue ) are used to produce 'RGB LED' monitors. Whereas Edge LEDs are mainly used for production of computer monitor Direct LED and 'RGB LED' are used for production of  'High Definition TV'

Side by side picture quality of LCD and LED monitor. It can be seen the picture of the LED monitor (right) is sharper and has better resolution.

How Cookies Work

What is Cookie?

Computer cookies also called 'HTTP' cookies are small files that a 'Web Site' sends to a user's computer and saved in the hard drive so that it can remember something about you in future. It may be said a cookie records your preferences while visiting a particular site. These files (cookies) record certain information about the computers and its users in relation to a specific 'Website'. A 'Web Server' cannot remember what pages it had sent to a particular user previously or anything about your previous visits. Cookies enable the 'Websites' to record information about a user, his/her preferences, type of browser, IP addresses on the visitor's own computer. Cookies are generally used to display 'Banner Ads' that a 'Web Site' sends so that it doesn't keep on sending the same ad while it sends a succession of requested pages. All web sites ask the visitors to let cookies saved in their computers so that the websites can serve the visitors better.

The information recorded by the 'cookies' are not generally very sensitive in nature but basic information such as user's name, email address etc. This information enables a website to remember a particular visitor when he or she visits the site again in future. Another advantage is that it accelerates the process 'web surfing'.

The main disadvantage is that when a lot of cookies are stored in your computer, it may become very slow. The way out is deleting these cookies and other temporary files at the end of the surfing by running a small program called  'CC Cleaner'. It may be downloaded free. Please refer my page "5 easy ways to run computer faster".

5 Easy Ways To Make Computer Run Faster

Increase Inadequate RAM

If your computer doesn't have sufficient RAM ( Random Access Memory ) at least 1 GB in case of old XP 2000 version and 2 GB in case of latest version of Windows, it is definitely to slow down. RAM is the temporary storage memory of the computer and is in use when various tasks are assigned to it. In case of loading of more programs into the computer specially larger files like 'Photoshop' or 'Java' and not having enough RAM, your computer is bound to become slower and hangs frequently also. The only way out in this case increase your RAM. Before replacing make sure the version of RAM fitted on your 'motherboard' - DDR I / DDR II or DDR III. All these types of RAMs are easily available in the market though DDR I  is a bit difficult to get nowadays. When replacing RAM never go for a 'Used One' and always stick to buying a 'New One'. Besides in case of new product, a warranty period of 6 months to 1 year is also available.

 Uninstall All Unused Programs

In most of the cases the user keeps the computer loaded with various programs not used by him at all. This must be avoided. Try to keep only those programs loaded in your computer which are essential and used by you at least a few times every week. This is one of the major reasons of the computer slowing down. In case you need various programs and at the same time not having sufficient space in 'hard drive' then the best option is to use an 'External Drive' available in the market. This may solve your problem. To remove a program go to 'Setting' - 'Control Panel' - 'Add or Remove Program' - now select the program you want to uninstall and click 'remove'. After removing the program it is better to restart your computer.

Automatically Delete All Temporary Files

When we browse the 'web' many 'temporary files' enter into the computer like - browsing history, cookies, IDs, passwords and many more. The computer remembers them all and a considerable space is wasted resulting in computer slowdown. To avoid this,  these history must be removed each time we surf the web. To do this task easily a small program 'CC Cleaner' (free version) may be downloaded here : filehippo.com/download_cccleaner/tech/  and installed in the computer. When this program is run after browsing the web all temporary files are deleted easily.

Uninstall All Unnecessary Words/Excel Documents, Videos & Photos

All of us waste a considerable amount of space of our computer by keeping above-mentioned unnecessary files which we never watch or seldom watch. They may be deleted or copied to CD or Pen drive and then deleted from the computer.

Periodic Cleaning Of Dust

Dust is a major enemy of your computer and laptop. Accumulated dust inside the computer prevents air reaching the 'Heat Sinks' and components that heat up when the computer is running. Therefore, periodic cleaning of dust at least once in 3 or 4 month may be necessary. It may be done very carefully by removing the side cover of the CPU using small soft brush and blowing air or with a standard suction equipment. If you are not used to do this, never try and assign the task to a service technician.

How Does A Mother Board Work And How to Instal

A 'motherboard' is the core of all functions of a computer. Motherboard is connected to all the'Hardwares' of computer e.g. scanner, printer, CD/DVD player, pen drive, mouse, keyboard, monitor hard drive an what
not. Motherboard is a very complicated printed circuit board(PCB) comprising various types of Chipsets, Transistors, Condenser, Diodes and other types of components. Motherboard is designed and engineered by very high level of sophosticated electronic engineers and manufactured in ultra modern factories. Motherboard is actually a patented product of a company like Microsoft. It's a research based area and constant upgrade and development take effect. This blog is aimed at giving the viewer some idea of a 'motherboard' and cannot make the viewer 'a specialist in motherboard'. Therefore, note a few facts about a 'motherboard' :-

1) A 'motherboard' usually cannot be repaired by technicians like a transistor radio,
CD player or a LCD TV. When a 'motherboard' develops a snag the technicians
usually advise for a replacement although some minor repairings like fixing a lose
soldering/slot or replacing a transistor may be done in some cases.

2) If you never know anything about a CPU never try to open it and call a technician
    in case a problem.

3) It must be remembered if the computer is within a warranty period only authorised
technicians of the company should open it, otherwise you lose the warranty.

4) RAM is not soldered to the motherboard and are fixed on slots and may be replaced
and upgraded easily. If you increase the RAM say from 1GB to 2GB the speed of
    computer also increases.

5) Always Secure your costly computer with a proper 'earthing'.

6) When it rains followed by lightning and flashes immediately switch off your computer
and disconnect it from electricity. There are a lot of people who had their motherboard
    burnt during rains lightning.

What is a Ram? What is a ROM? What is a HDD?

What is a RAM? What is a ROM?

Ram or 'Random Access Memory' is a 'computer memory'(Internal storage
areas in a computer) that can be accessed randomly. Here randomly signifies
that any number of 'bytes' of memory can be approached(read/write)
without touching and disturbing the other preceding 'bytes'. Bytes( abbreviation
of Binary) signifies a 'unit' of storage. One byte is capable of holding a
single character. In latest computers one 'byte' is equal to 8 'bits'. Memories
are indicated in terms of 'kilobytes'(KB), 'megabytes'(MB) or 'gigabytes(GB).
For instance, a specific file may contain (2,025 bytes) or it may contain
(5.215.743 bytes) or (3,985,486.000 bytes) and so on.

Ram may be of two types - Dynamic Random Access Memory(DRAM) or
Static Random Access Memory(SRAM). These two types of  RAM differ
in technology and their application. DRAM is the most common type of
RAM used in our computers nowadays though SRAM is faster. Common
users of computers, for whose knowledge this blog is intended, need not go
into further complex  technology of RAM. They are meant for technical personnel.

Rom or 'Read Only Memory' is a type of storage medium used in computers
and other electronic appliances. Data stored in ROM can be read but cannot
be easily modified/changed. It is mainly used in 'software'(programs) that is
closely linked to efficient functioning of some 'Hardware'(hard disc drive HDD,
mouse, monitor, keyboard, printer, motherboard and many more). Again
general users of computers need not overload their brains to know every
structure and program of  ROM as they are meant for 'Software & Hardware
Engineers'

What is a Hard Disc Drive or HDD?

The hard disc drive or HDD is the biggest data storage hardware/device
inside a personal computer. A hardware means all the physical components
of a computer that make up a full computer system e.g. HDD/SMPS/Mouse
/Keyboard/Monitor/RAM/CPU/Motherboard and many more). The HDD is
sometimes referred to as 'Hard Drive' also. The basic function of HDD is to
store and also retrieve data as when required. The size of a HDD may be 3.5"
or 2.5" for a PC or Laptop respectively.
A Hard Drive may comprise one or more Platters (small disk of aluminium/
glass or ceramic coated in a magnetic media on which the computer writes the
data. As soon as the computer starts, the platter starts to rotate and the read/
write head touching the platter starts retrieving the data or writes fresh data
on it.just like a Tape Recorder or CD ROM player/writer. The data in the Platter
is stored in various tracks, sectors and cylinders to enable the user to locate
specific data efficiently and quickly. When listening to songs/music on a CD, we
find different songs on different track for easy access.

Can You Afford To Rely On A Free Antivirus?

Can you rely on a free Antivirus?
Free antivirus programs available are also numerous and diversified
like paid antivirus programs. Although free antivirus programs offer some
protection to the computer but under no circumstances they can be
compared with paid antivirus programs. After all, they are free.

Most free antivirus programs offer protection while surfing the internet. In
case anything goes wrong and the PC is invaded by some lethal malware
you cannot resort to immediate help.

Most free antivirus provide support only on their online forums. You may
get some good 'Do it Yourself' advices here also Wilders Security Forums
but even there nobody can be directly approached if you have got a free
Antivirus program.

Free Antivirus programs have generally less-frequent signature
database update than paid Antivirus programs. The PC becomes
vulnerable to newer types of 'malwares' because of this drawback.
There are of course, some free antivirus app that update their signatures
at least once daily.

In terms of scanning, free Antivirus app usually have less options compared
to paid Antivirus programs from the same company.

Lastly it may be concluded, if your purpose is only to browse the web, you
may go in for a free Antivirus program.

WARNING: If  you have an online business or independent professional job
and  if you have files in your PC losing of which may cost you dearly, never
opt for a free Antivirus program. Spend a little to be on the safer side.

What is an Antivirus? What is a Virus? What is an Utility?

What is an Antivirus?
An Antivirus is a software program or software utility aimed at
safeguarding your computer or system against a threat from  viruses.
The Antivirus in your computer automatically warns you when you are
entering an unsafe website. The Antivirus also alerts when your computer
is attacked by a virus displaying - the type of virus, the exact file/area
where it has attacked and the actions you can take viz., remove/delete/
ignore/move to vault etc. Without an Antivirus your entire work/job
saved in the computer, may be wiped out by a virus.

What is a virus?
A computer virus is actually a program or script designed to destroy
or modify or delete all or a particular data in computer, to obtain personal or
confidential information saved in computer, to display messages, to send
email. It may also force not to let open a particular file or programe. The virus
in a computer spreads like cancer in human body. It copies itself many times
and invades all files and programs. Virus programers are actually expert
software writers who possess detailed knowledge of computer vulnerabilities.

What is an Utility?
An  utility is an application or program of small size aimed at carrying
out a particular task relating to system resource management. A good
example of this may be 'CC Cleaner' which cleans up all unecessary
files/cookies from the computer and lets the computer work faster.
